A diamond certificate (or diamond grading report) is a report created by one or more trained gemologists. The diamond is evaluated, measured, and scrutinized using trained eyes, a jeweler’s loupe, a microscope, and other industry tools to determine the diamond’s carat weight, clarity, color, dimensions, polish, symmetry, and other attributes. These characteristics will be noted on the diamond grading report. On some more recent round diamond reports, a cut grade may also be included.

Among the most respected diamond grading labs and institutes are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), American Gem Society (AGS), and European Gemological Laboratory (EGL). These three laboritories are known for their consistency and unbiased diamond grading systems. Diamonds accompanied by these grading reports are the most highly valued and provide peace of mind to the buyer.
